Portable Air Stripper System
The portable system is contained in a 16' enclosed, dual axle trailer. Upon
arrival on site, the system can setup by one technician and be operational
in less than one hour if suitable electrical service and water discharge points
are available.
The system is constructed around a Shallow Tray 2630 air stripper. This stripper
is factory rated at 100 gallons per minute. The control
circuitry is located on the nose of the trailer and is enclosed in a weatherproof
box. Indicator lights are used to show component operation. The wiring is
entirely NEC Class 1, Division 1 rated for explosive environments. The NYS
Department of Labor has inspected the system for OSHA safety standards. The
system is equipped with kWh electric meter and an hour meter that totalizes
the operational time of the stripper pump and individual hour and event meters
for each well pump.
Water can be pumped from drilled wells, culvert wells or an excavation by
as many as three pumps. The system has additional controls for pumping from
wells into a large external settling tank and then from the settling tank
into the equipment trailer. Each pump is connected by 1" or 2" hose
equipped with quick disconnects to a manifold on the trailer. Each port can
be sampled individually and pumps may be throttled at the manifold. Available
pumps include 1" deep well pumps and 2" submersible construction
pumps. Any combination of pumps may be used. The pumps are connected to the
electrical panel by twist lock plugs. Power to the pumps is ground fault protected
and control circuitry is intrinsically safe. Each pump control system is equipped
with selector switches that allow manual or automatic control utilizing probe
water level sensors. Each pump power circuit is equipped with a panel-mounted
ammeter to monitor pump load.
Water enters the system through the manifold and fills a 500-gallon product/water
separator. This is a coalescing separator rated for 100 gallons per minute.
The separator is also used to knock out silt. The separator contains weirs
and the coalescing unit can be removed if not needed. If substantial amounts
of free product are encountered, a skimmer can be fitted and product diverted
to 55-gallon drums. Water flows from the top of the separator into a 250-gallon
staging tank. This is done to prevent level fluctuations in the oil/water
separator. Water is then pumped from the staging tank into the air stripper.
A water flow rate meter is utilized to adjust the flow to the air stripper.
The separator tank/staging tanks are fitted with high level controls to shut
down the well pumps in the event of high water levels. The control circuitry
is designed to allow intermittent operation and blower overrun when the stripper
pump shuts down. Water is then pumped from the stripper through a discharge
water meter and can be diverted through carbon units if desired. The stripper
is equipped with a low air pressure shut down switch and high water level
shutdown. The carbon units are equipped with a high-pressure shutdown switch.
The system is capable of operating unattended. When a safety circuit shuts
the system down, it only shuts down the effected components. When conditions
return to normal, the system will automatically restart. The controls have
been designed to prevent short cycling of shutdown and restarts. The system
is equipped with 500 feet of 2" hose in 50-foot sections, as well as
400 feet of 1" hose in sections of varying length. Each pump is equipped
with wiring and probe contacts and quick disconnects. Each pump wire loom
is contained in a fiberglass sleeve which terminates with a single weather
proof twist lock connector for control and power hookup at the panel. Discharge
is through 1-1/4" hose for low flows (under 50 gpm) or 2" hose for
higher flows.
A separate 110 volt panel is available for operating two pumps and a carbon
treatment system. This panel can be used in conjunction with the air stripper
trailer to allow pumping from as many a 5 wells simultaneously.
The entire system including control circuitry was designed and constructed
by the principals and employees of Passaretti & Fina, thereby giving us
a very thorough understanding of the capabilities and logic of the system.
